Module 10 Video Review
I chose the two videos because I personally don’t know much about Buddhism or Hinduism so I thought the videos may have something new to teach me.
Key points on Buddhism:
- Buddhism began in India and was started by Siddhartha Guatama.
- Siddhartha Guatama was a prince, who was devistated when he first learned about poverty, sickness, and death. He sought to find out what happened after death, and to find peace and contentment in his lifetime.
- Bodh Gaya is religious location for Buddhism.
- It is believed that in buddhism, after you die, you are reincarnated. One may live many lives before they find true peace and move on to Nirvana.
- Buddhism split into two groups. Monks, and those who chose not to be monks.
- Sanchi is a Center of Buddhist art and architecture.
- Much, if not all, of ancient Buddhist architecture is carved from stone.
- Images of Buddhist stories were carved into the stone so even the illiterate could seek enlightenment.
- It is believed that because the quality of the carvings is so detailed, that they were done by wood and ivory carvers.
Key points on Hinduism:
- Varanasi is the oldest inhabited city in the world, and also the holiest city in Hinduism.
- Hinduism, similar to Buddhism, also believes in reincarnation.
- There are social statuses known as Castes, of higher and lower levels in society.
- Castes may determine who you mary, what jobs you are allowed to do, and how you may live your life.
- There are a multitude of gods, goddesses, and in between that are worshiped in Hinduism.
- Hindu art Focusses little on temples and more on decoration.
- Hinduism focuses on depicting the many gods and goddesses.
The videos helped me better understand the text. I personally did not know much about Hinduism or Buddhism before. It was interesting to see how the different aspects of a religion can play into the art made through the inspiration of that religion. I found the videos well done and informative.
